Artificial intelligence (AI) and related generative AI (GenAI) technologies are taking the world by storm. Just as cloud-based applications enabled stakeholders' business-wide to make technology decisions and purchases outside of formal organizational channels decades ago, the same rogue deployments are now occurring with GenAI solutions.
TechTarget’s Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) explored the prevailing trends related to how business, technology, and other stakeholders are collaborating—or not—on AI and GenAI deployments. The firm’s research, derived from survey responses from hundreds of data and technology professionals in North America, is now available in the analyst report, “The Rise of Business Stakeholders in AI Decision-making.”
ESG’s research for this brief found that a wide range of stakeholders directly influence how AI- and GenAI-related decisions are made within organizations. While technical professionals are highly involved in these decisions, non-technical stakeholders have considerable influence.
For organizations of all sectors and sizes, it is essential to the success of AI initiatives that those with the right expertise—strategic, technical, business, compliance, and otherwise—are involved in related decision-making. However, the over-influence of non-technical stakeholders might not be ideal for GenAI decisions as it could lead to strategic oversights, improper implementation, and a lack of understanding of the potential risks and rewards. AI systems are complex and the lack of technical understanding could result in decisions that compromise the effectiveness, efficiency and safety of the AI system in use.
Furthermore, ESG suggests that application developers are crucial to these conversations and decisions since they will be working directly with the teams using and supporting AI-powered technologies.
Business decisions related to AI are becoming more frequent. Ensuring the right AI stakeholders are involved in the conversations, collaborations, and eventual decisions can directly impact the success of AI and GenAI initiatives.
